It will definitely be more expensive than the current broadband plans for a start, however, things might change as more people adopt this new ultra-fast broadband network.

You can do a rollout check by going to Opennet and key in your area code.

HTC Desire Tips & Tricks http://www.josephgan.com/2010/07/htc-desire-tips-tricks/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=htc-desire-tips-tricks http://www.josephgan.com/2010/07/htc-desire-tips-tricks/#comments Thu, 22 Jul 2010 12:49:54 +0000 Joseph http://www.josephgan.com/?p=161 HTC DesireHTC Desire running on Android 2.1 (Eclair) has caught the attention of many people with it’s attractive specification.

HTC had already confirmed that Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be coming to Desire before Christmas. Which in fact HTC had previously announced it to come in beginning of Q3 2010. With the past experience from HTC Hero, it is no surprise that Froyo will be further delayed again. Let’s hope that HTC will keep their promise this time round.

Tips:

  1. Holding on to the Home Button allows you to view the last 6 apps you’ve used.
  2. View all Programs > Hold on the Apps you want to put at Home screen and drop.
  3. Dial *#*#4636#*#* to view lots of info.
  4. Do not use Task Killer to kill apps as Android OS will handle the resources itself. Only use it for bugging apps.
  5. Turn off Wifi & GPS if not in need to save battery.
  6. Tap on the contact picture, and you will see a list of shortcut such as call people, facebook, SMS, email, etc.
  7. Delete Market, Gallery, Maps, etc Cache to save space.

Tricks:

  1. Adding custom ringtones, notifications and alarms.
    • Create these folders:
    • Ringtones: /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
      SMS Alerts: /sdcard/media/audio/notifications
      Alarm Alerts: /sdcard/media/audio/alarms
    • Copy the files into the respective folders.
    • Head to Settings > Sound > Change accordingly
  2. Solve music player playing non-music items. (Credit – HWZ)
    • On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
    • Save the blank file as “.nomedia”
Make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
    • Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing audio files you don’t want to show up.
(Example: If you want to block gameloft sound files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/games folder)
    • Reboot your phone and the files should no longer be viewable
This same trick works for folders containing images or videos that you don’t want to appear in the Gallery app. The files will still be accessible from your original app or an explorer like Astro or Estrong
    • Either restart the phone or clear your media storage cache from “Manage Applications”
    • Start your HTC Media player and now you will see only your music files and nothing extra.
  3. Sync your contact from Outlook to Phone and then from Phone to Google
    • Menu > People > Menu > View > Phone
Still in People, now showing all contacts under Phone.
    • Menu > Export to SD card
Once done exporting to SD card.
    • Menu > Import from SD card > Select Google
Now that your Phone contact will be imported to Google.
    • Perform a Google contact Sync.
    • Wait and all contact should be Sync to your Google contacts in no time!
    • Note: You can do the above too, if you changed your phone and import the contact from SIM to phone and Sync to Google contacts.

Useful Guide:

  1. Add Turn by Turn Navigation To HTC Desire
  2. Add Voice to Text To HTC Desire
  3. Add Nexus One launcher to HTC Desire
  4. Add Nexus One Gallery to HTC Desire
  5. Add Voice Search to HTC Desire

Well, that’s all for now. And I’m sure you to be able to benefit from this post as well.

Recommended Google Chrome Extensions http://www.josephgan.com/2010/07/recommended-google-chrome-extensions/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=recommended-google-chrome-extensions http://www.josephgan.com/2010/07/recommended-google-chrome-extensions/#comments Mon, 19 Jul 2010 18:06:40 +0000 Joseph http://www.josephgan.com/?p=150 Chrome being released by Google on 2008 and has been moving fast ahead to catch with their competitors. In the early stage of the release, it is definitely fast, stable and reliable. However, it does not have the support for extension and theme which I believe, most user are looking out for that increase the browsing experience.

Certainly, now that Chrome has the support for both, I have since used Chrome as my default browser. So I am now going to introduce you some of the extension which I find helpful. The list are not in order of priority.

1. Adblock+ Element Hiding Helper – Subscribe to a list of block ads, which you will also be able to filter and block elements.

2. Auto HD for YouTube – Auto play HD format video if found. For HD lovers.

3. Clickable Links – Turns unclickable email and address to clickable. Save lots of time.

4. FastestChrome – Auto paging, look up definition by highlighting.

5. Slideshow – Turns Flickr, Facebook, Picasa images into Slideshow so that you can view it more enjoyable.

6. TinEye Reverse Image Search – Search for similar images, higher resolution and other users. Good for researching images.

7. Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) – Don’t have to download your attachment again, you can view it all using this.

8. Web Developer – Best for web-developer. It added a toolbar which includes tools for forms, css, images and more!

9. Chrome Sniffer – Finds out what framework the website is using such as WordPress, jQuery, etc.

10. ChrometoPhone – Very useful for those using Android device. Used to send links, maps and more from computer to phone.

That’s all for now. Hope you find it useful. If you wish to recommend other extension as well, please leave your comments below.
